Mission Statement
We believe in the vital importance of knowing and savoring the heritage of America's small towns expressed in significant buildings and talented people. To know is to appreciate local scenes of past glories; to savor is to applaud new uses for restored relics that bring many benefits to today's population. Accordingly , We have organized in Columbia City, the county seat of Whitley County, to endeavor to preserve outstanding landmarks that have witnessed historical events and promise to be a stage for future magic moments.
About Us
People Preserving History is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of historic landmarks in Whitley County, Indiana. The goals and objectives of PPH are to promote public awareness and interest in historic preservation through educational programs and preservation activism. Report of the Hyatt Palma Columbia City Downtown Action Agenda 2005 "Although Downtown is a National Register Historic District, a strong preservation ethic does not appear to exist in the community at this time. Consequently, many of Downtown's historic buildings have been lost over time. This is of grave economic concern since historic structures have been used by communities nationwide to create a Downtown atmosphere that attracts discerning investors, customers, and tourists. Conversely, communities that demolish their historic buildings tend to end up with Downtowns that are bland, indistinguishable from highway strips, and unable to compete with nearby megastores. Therefore, the private and public sector leaders of Columbia City are strongly urged to become champions of saving, rehabbing, and reusing Downtown's historic buildings."
